CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The check is in the mail.
After a botched property appraisal for thousands of Mecklenburg County homes and years of appeals and reappraisals, the first round of refund checks is in the mail.
County tax office officials explained the process to a group of community leaders from more than a dozen neighborhoods this morning.
They say every taxpayer will get a notice telling them whether the reappraisal increases their tax burden, decreases it, or whether it’s the same.
Even if the tax remains the same, taxpayers still have the right to appeal the reappraisal.
Former County Commission Chair Pat Cotham told the neighbors the county lost $22 million last year as part of what she calls “the debacle.”
