CHESTER COUNTY, S.C. -- Friends are rallying around a Chester County mother who lost her infant daughter to alleged child abuse last week.
Madison Stewart died Friday of head injuries suffered while being cared for by her mother’s boyfriend.
Jeffery Todd Bradley, 27, an Iraq war veteran, is charged in her death. He is in the Chester County jail with no bond.
Madison’s mother, Penny Stewart, is devastated, said family friend Jodi Dover. Dover is friends with Stewart’s brother, who would watch Madison while her mother worked two jobs to support her.
“I was just devastated for Penny,” she said. “She just wanted a baby for so long, and that was her only baby.”
Dover knew there was little she could do to ease Stewart’s grief.
“It was senseless,” she said through tears. “I just felt like it was so senseless, so heartless, for him to be that cold.”
Knowing a funeral would probably cost too much for a grieving single mom to afford, Dover set up a way for friends and family to help. She set up a page on a fundraising website.
The page on gofundme.com had already raised $2,700 by Sunday night. The goal is $8,000.
“Honestly, I just really wish I could do more,” said Dover. So do others. She knows the case rests in the hands of the law.
“I hope that he gets justice,” she said.
But at least she hopes Madison’s grieving mom will have one less thing to worry about.
