GRANDFATHER MOUNTAIN, N.C. (AP) -- Last week's storm included a record wind gust for Grandfather Mountain.
Officials at the mountain say the wind gusted to 120.7 mph for three seconds last Friday. That broke the record three-second gust of 114.7 mph set on Jan. 26, 2011.
The wind gust was part of a low pressure system that brought widespread winds above 50 mph to much of the North Carolina mountains, causing power outages and knocking down trees.
Observers have been recording the weather for nearly six decades at the Mile High Swinging Bridge on the North Carolina peak.
