BURKE COUNTY, N.C. -- A fatal crash left I-40 in Burke County shut down Thursday morning.
A deadly tractor-trailer accident occurred about 6:40 Thursday morning on I-40 East at mile marker 113, Rutherford College Road, in Burke County.
North Carolina Highway Patrol says it appears the driver of the tractor trailer went off the left shoulder, over corrected, went off the right shoulder and overturned.
NCHP Trooper Berkins says there were two people inside the tractor trailer at the time of the crash. The passenger, who was entrapped in the rig's sleeper cab, was extricated. Authorities did not comment on the passenger's injuries.
The driver, according to Trooper Berkins, was pinned inside the vehicle for some time and died at the scene.
The names of those involved have not been released.
Emergency crews worked all morning to clear the debris and wreckage from the roadway. By 12:15, both lanes of I-40 eastbound reopened to thru traffic.
