HICKORY, N.C. -- Crews in Hickory are finishing work on a drainage pipe that caused a huge sinkhole to open up on U.S. 70 in May.

Two of three westbound lanes are now closed on the highway in front of Valley Hills Mall.

Contractors are digging up the area to install a 24-inch drainage pipe, replacing a damaged pipe.

Crews hope to have the work completed by Friday or Saturday.

The 12-feet wide sinkhole opened up May 19 in front of Judge's BBQ Express. Officials say a storm drain junction box collapsed, causing the sinkhole.
