CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Ballantyne is one of the more affluent neighborhoods in Charlotte.
The community has country clubs, upscale shopping and high performing schools. It may also soon have public housing.
"I'm not an elitist. I like to live near all kinds of people. But logistically, I don't see it being practical," said Connie Jarzmik, who lives near the proposed site on the corner of Providence Road West and Johnston Road.
Jarzmik says there is only one bus stop in the area and it's a mile from the site. She also worries about the nearby schools, already overcrowded.
If approved by the City Council, a family of four, making less than $20,000 a year, could live in the complex. So could a family of four making less than $40,000 a year.
Warren Cooksey is the council member for the area. He says a new state law allows local authorities to vote on proposed public housing on the basis of land use only.
"This is solely about whether to approve 110 apartments on Providence Road West and Highway 521," he said.
The Charlotte Housing Authority says it is committed to providing housing throughout the city. Jennifer Gallman says the Housing Authority looks at job availability, public transportation access and schools before committing to sites.
The Charlotte City Council could vote on the complex March 18.
