CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Some stay inside on cold winter days. Some go swimming.

"It's cold," said Matthew, dripping wet and shivering Saturday morning as he stood on the bank of the manmade river at the U.S. Whitewater Center in Charlotte.

"But it great, I loved it," he said.

Matthew was one of more than 350 participants who took part in the second annual Frigid 5K run.

The course takes runners around the center then culminates with a dip in the cold waters.

One of the folks who took the plunge is NBC Charlotte photojournalist Thomas Wilson.

"It was fun. Something you don't get to do everyday."
