UNION COUNTY, N.C.-- Most of us spend the weekends getting our own errands done, doing things around the house, but hundreds of Union County volunteers did just that for others Saturday as part of the United Way annual "Day of Caring."
Hundreds packed the Irwin Belk Stadium on Wingate University early Saturday morning, all with the same intentions -- to show others how much they care by stepping up and stepping in to help.
"This is what they really want to have done but they can't do it themselves," said Michael Jordan with the United Way of Central Carolinas.
More than 1,100 volunteers from companies, church groups and businesses gave their time to help others.
Helen Hendrix, 77, was one of the people who received some help. Volunteers helped her with some much needed yard work.
Hendrix said the help was "like heaven. I haven't got there yet but I believe heaven is going to be somewhere close to this."
Volunteers mowed her lawn, cleaned her gutters and organized her garage.
She, like others in Union County, understood firsthand what the "Day of Caring" means.
The United Way of Central Carolinas has been holding the event for 18 years.
Volunteers also donated things like soap and clothes for the needy.
