CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The North Carolina Department of Transportation is one step closer to completing the Interstate 485 loop in northern Mecklenburg County.
Work began on portion of the project Monday. A section of Beard Road between Ridge and Christenbury Roads is closed for 45 days while construction moves along on the outer loop.
According to the DOT, the contractor is working to realign the road at the intersection of Ridge Road. Drivers can follow a posted detour along Christenbury Road, Odell School Road and Mallard Creek Road. The closure is part of the Charlotte outerloop project, completing the final 5.7 miles of I-485.
The DOT says the closure might be irksome for some motorists, but worth it in the end.
"Hopefully it will be better in 45 days. When we get Ridge Road changed over and it's going to change Odell School Road over as well, it should make congestion not any worse than it is now, if not better," said engineer Nat Hunter.
The entire project is scheduled for completion in spring of 2014.
