CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- One person was killed early Wednesday afternoon on Interstate 85, apparently after falling or jumping off a bridge onto the freeway.
The N.C. Highway Patrol confirms a fatality, and police radio reports indicated a pedestrian was killed.
The incident happened around noon, on southbound I-85 near the Freedom Drive overpass. The N.C. Department of Transportation reported “a jumper” had caused all southbound lanes to be closed.
At 12:15 p.m., troopers were able to open one southbound lane. A shoe could be seen in the southbound lane near the bridge, with the victim’s body about 40 feet away. Pieces of a vehicle could be seen nearby on the roadway.
Traffic is badly snarled in the area, and motorists should consider finding an alternate route.
