KANNAPOLIS, N.C. -- A kindergarten student was run over by his own school bus Wednesday morning in Kannapolis.

Damarea Porter is in critical condition at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte following the accident at the Royal Oak Garden Apartments on University Drive.

Police say the boy missed the bus at his stop at Clemson Court and University Drive and tried to catch the bus as it was turning around in a cul-de-sac at the end of University Drive, less than a block away.

Investigators looked at video from the camera on the bus and say it shows Porter running towards the bus on the diagonal. They say it appears he fell and rolled under the bus as it was moving forward.

"It appears he missed his initial stop and was trying to catch the bus," says Captain Chuck Adams of the Kannapolis Police Department.

Jessica Laredo was on the bus.

"The bus driver started crying, 'Oh my God Oh my God, I ran over the little boy,'" she says.

The Cabarrus County school bus was scheduled to take the students to Royal Oak Elementary.

A spokesman for the school district says the driver had been suspended with pay, pending the outcome of the investigation.

Kannapolis Police say it is unlikely any charges will be filed against the driver.

Parents who gathered near where the accident happened say they try wait for the bus with their children, but many other parents do not.

"I'm not blaming the parents, I'm not blaming the driver, but, us parents, we need to be more cautious about what goes on out here," says one parent, Earrick Sutton.
