MOORESVILLE, N.C. (AP) -- The owner of a private zoo in Mooresville plans to fight claims by an animal rights group that he is mistreating a giraffe by letting its hooves grow too long.
The Salisbury Post reports a member of the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals obtained an arrest warrant Thursday on an animal cruelty charge against Lazy 5 Ranch owner Henry Hampton.
The warrant accuses Hampton of failing to get adequate care for the giraffe's overgrown hooves.
But Hampton tells the newspaper he has giraffes walk on gravel or limestone to naturally trim their hooves. He says the method has worked with 16 other giraffes on his ranch over the last eight years.
The ranch also has ostriches, zebras and other exotic animals.
