SALISBURY, N.C. -- A Rowan County city is recognized by a major nationwide organization.

Downtown Salisbury is  a "Best Neighborhood" 2012 according to the American Planning Association.  The the APA says the small city delivers a unique experience for both visitors and residents.

The city and its planning director, Joe Morris, are getting recognized for working hard to preserve Salisbury's historic buildings and character, all the while finding modern uses for some long abandoned structures.

Morris say the city was hit hard by the recession, but that officials, residents and businesses have worked hard to overcome the slow downturn.  Those who live in Salisbury seem to agree.

"It's a friendly, people oriented town with just enough variety and good restaurants.  People come from Charlotte and Winston just because it has a neat small town feel, but has a lot to offer," said Toby Hagmaier owner of Southern Spirit Gallery on Main Street.

Other cities named on the "Best Neighborhood" list include Fells Point in Baltimore, Maryland, the Garden District in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and Walla Walla in Washington.
