CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Feeling a little cash poor? NBC Charlotte is looking out for you, with free money.
Mary Pitman is the self-proclaimed missing money lady. She's appeared on television with money guru Suze Orman bringing good news to people who have unclaimed cash.
Pitman even wrote a book about finding money, called 'The Little Book of Missing Money.'
It's easy to find unclaimed cash. NBC Charlotte reporter Ann Sheridan did it in seconds. First place to look? Unclaimed.org.
There's more than $41 billion on this site broken down state by state.
"It's big enough were people should look. You have nothing to lose by looking. It's free to search and free to claim,” said Pitman.
Don't forget to check all the states you've ever lived in, and important to women to look under your maiden name also.
But don't stop there. Go to the top of the unclaimed.org page and find the orange tab called other sources for unclaimed property.
"That'll include things like IRS money refunds that got returned and savings bonds that should be cashed and reinvested,” she said.
Pitman’s helped plenty of people find missing money, including the Former Governor Jeb Bush, investigative reporter Bob Woodward and the late Lilly Pulitzer.
