STANFIELD, N.C. -- Two horses are being nourished back to health after neighbors in Stanly County contacted authorities.
The horses were starved so badly that their ribs showed.
"It's very mind boggling to me. I just want to cry for the horse or for any animal that gets into that kind of condition because it's uncalled for," said Sharon Gadd, president of the Stanly County Human Society.
Stanly County Animal Control officers took the horses to a veterinarian. After one week of care, one of the horses has already gained 200 pounds, but the vet says the horse needs to gain about 800 more pounds to be healthy.
A woman was arrested and charged with animal cruelty. However, on Feb. 15, 2011, a judge dismissed all charges.
