Man faces drug charges after police stumble on pot operation

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. -- Rowan County authorities arrested a man on drug related charges after searching for another suspect.

Kannapolis police charged Santavius Lamar Mayfield with possession of marijuana, maintain dwelling for controlled substances, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Police arrested Mayfield after they knocked at his residence in search for another suspect they were looking for. When Mayfield opened the front door, detectives immediately noticed a strong odor of marijuana coming from inside the residence. 

Detectives asked as to the location of the suspect they were looking for.  Mayfield advised that he did not know the suspect  and he was not inside the residence. 

Authorities then questioned Mayfield about the apparent smell of marijuana.  Mayfield advised that he had just smoked marijuana. 

Detectives requested consent to search Mayfield’s residence for the marijuana. 

Mayfield consented to detectives searching his home where they found two mason jars containing marijuana packaged for sale and items to package the drugs.

Mayfield was jailed on a $2,500 secured bond.
