CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A 21-year-old man arrested for sexually assaulting a UNC Charlotte student will go before a judge today.
Police say a friend let Damien Pruitt into a dorm and then during the night he assaulted a female student in her room.
Investigators say Pruitt, who is not a student, was allowed inside the Pine Hall dormitory.
He was then allowed into a suite of four rooms and at some point police say he went into one of the rooms and attacked a girl who he did not know.
Word of the attack spread quickly around the campus.
"It is really unbelievable that even happened on campus, and you know that it could happen to you," said student Megan Shue.
Campus Police Chief Jeffrey Baker was asked about measures to limit who gets into dorms.
Baker said, "It’s all by card-swipe. You have to have a current student ID card to even get in."
That’s unless a person is allowed in by a student, as in this case.
"I guess you just have to be careful of who you let come where you live," said another student, Alexus Hansley.
Pruitt is charge with second-degree rape, second-degree sexual offense and misdemeanor battery.
He was booked in to the Mecklenburg County Jail under bonds totaling $200,000.
