KINGS MOUNTAIN, N.C. -- Police said they caught a man red-handed, making meth at his home Tuesday.
Kings Mountain Police went to Michael Ellis' house on North Cansler Street to investigate reports of drug activity. According to a police report, officers found Ellis sitting in the backyard.
When he got up to speak with them, officers spotted a clear plastic bottle next to his lawn chair, containing what they believed was methamphetamine. It tested positive and Cleveland County Sheriff's deputies arrived shortly afterwards with a search warrant.
They said they found an active meth lab inside Ellis' home.
Officers returned on Wednesday with the State Bureau of Investigations to process the lab. It was then that police said Ellis' girlfriend, Alice Gilliam, tried to sneak back into the meth lab to destroy evidence.
She's charged with assaulting an officer who tried to stop her.
Ellis is charged with possession of methamphetamines.
