CATAWBA, S.C. -- South Carolina Highway Patrol troopers said a 76-year-old man was killed after his pickup truck slammed into the back of a postal worker's Jeep Wednesday afternoon.
Around 2:30 p.m., mailwoman Patricia Smith, 58, was on US highway 21 near Dixon Leslie Road delivering the mail when Benjamin Franklin Canfield's 1995 Chevrolet S-10 veered off the right side of the road and hit the postal worker's 2012 Jeep Wrangler, according to troopers.
Canfield, of Catawba, was rushed to Piedmont Medical Center where he died. Troopers said he was not wearing a seat belt and it wasn't clear why he veered off the roadway.
Smith was also taken to Piedmont but has been treated and released.
