CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A man who was rescued after the car he was in crashed into a pond in northeast Charlotte Thursday morning has died.

The incident happened on Merlane Drive near Sugar Creek Road around 1:30 a.m.

Two people were in the car when the woman driving lost control and crashed into the pond, leaving the car partially submerged.

The woman was able to escape without injuries, but 26-year-old Lewis Brice-Simms had to be rescued by firefighters.

Brice-Simms died at Carolinas Medical Center around 11 a.m. Friday.

The Charlotte Fire Department said it took 18 firefighters and about 20 minutes to free the man trapped in the car.

Police say evidence of alcohol use was found on scene and in the car.  An investigation is on going.
