ROCK HILL, S.C. -- York County Sheriff's Office is asking the public's help to find out how a man ended up unconscious on the side of the road with injuries.

On Jan. 31, just after 11 p.m., a passerby found 49-year-old Eric Jay Joseph lying on his back.

Deputies were called to the corner of Soulville and Stan Stella roads in Rock Hill, where they found Joseph with severe injuries to his face and head.

Jospeh was found just 30 yards from his house.

“He was heading home,” said his father, Sammie.

His family believes he was on his way home after drinking at a friend’s house. He says Joseph typically walks along the grassy-stretch of the road.

Joseph lives with his father, who said he came outside after seeing the flashing lights of the deputies squad cars outside.

Sammie was told by doctors that his injuries are similar to what he would have sustained if he had been struck by a passing car. He hopes someone comes forward with the answers they desperately want.

"I think sooner or later, somebody is going to say something,” he said.

Sammie estimates his son had been laying injured for at least half-an-hour.

He says Joseph lived in this neighborhood all his life.

"Around here, this is a family. Everybody has been around here for a long time, everybody knows everybody,” said his niece Keyona Joseph.

“Somebody had to have seen something, somebody had to know something,” she said.

Joseph remains in critical condition at CMC. His family says he suffered damage to his brain and is on life support.

Keyona Joseph says her uncle's life will never be the same.  If he survives, he will need around-the-clock care.

“Simple tasks like brushing his teeth, breathing, he is not ever going to be able to function.”

Anyone with information should call 1-877-409-4321.
