ROWAN COUNTY, N.C. -- The barbecue fundraiser for Rowan County firefighter Marcus Kauffman's family exceeded expectations, said the chief of the Scotch-Irish Fire Department, who hosted the event.

Kauffman died nearly three weeks after being shot during a confrontation with burglars at his home in early December.  Four men are charged in the shooting.

The community has rallied around Kauffman's wife and his unborn child since the shooting.  Maryann Kauffman is expecting the couple's first child in February.

Saturday, she stopped by the fire department's fundraiser to say thank you.

While declining to speak publicly, she smiled and said she was overwhelmed by the support and excited about the birth of her child, which she hasn't named yet.

Scotch-Irish Fire Chief Trey Hoshall added,  "She's beside herself.  She's overwhelmed by the outpouring of support, the outpouring of people, of well-wishers.. it's been humbling for her too I believe."

Chief Hoshall said the department sold 1,580 plates of BBQ chicken on Friday, and had already ordered another 1,100 plates Saturday morning.

The department had named a goal of 2,000 plates and had far surpassed that, said Hoshall.

Volunteers were still cooking chicken late Saturday afternoon, and doors are expected to be open until 8 p.m.

A memorial motorcycle ride is also planned for April.
