WADESBORO, N.C. – A massive sinkhole is disrupting residents in Wadesboro, and the issue is not expected to be fixed for weeks.
The sinkhole opened up on an access road off of Highway 74 last week but has now expanded to roughly 50 feet wide and 20 to 25 feet deep, officials said.
A 30-year-old pipe from a nearby river runs underneath the road and couldn’t handle the increased water pressure that resulted from heavy rain recently.
The sinkhole must be fixed by Claude Smith, a property owner in Rockingham, and construction may take at least six weeks. Smith owns the property and rents it to several area businesses.
A McDonald’s, Pizza Hut and Harvest Ministries Church and Homeless Shelter are just a few of the places that lead to the road.
Roughly 10 people at the shelter had to be evacuated due to the sinkhole, and officials are working to find other areas to hold them.
