GRANITE FALLS, N.C. – Emergency cleanup crews worked to remove mercury from two locations in Caldwell County on Sunday after a suspicious bag was found.

A caller reported a suspicious bag with books and other items inside was found on Dry Ponds Road in Granite Falls, and when deputies recovered the bag they discovered mercury was inside it, according to the report.

Crews cleaned up the spill both at the location on Dry Ponds Road and back at the Sheriff’s Office where the bag was initially transported.

Police are still working to determine the source of the mercury, and no one was injured in the incident.

“I am thankful that someone called and I encourage people to call in when they see something that is looks suspicious. We want to keep our communities safe and working together helps all of us to live in safer neighborhoods,” said Sheriff Alan Jones.
