MIDLAND, N.C. -- Several roads in Cabarrus County were closed Friday as water from small creeks spilled over because of heavy rain.

The following roads are closed:

  • Bethel School Road between Midland Road and U.S. Highway 601;
  • Hopewell Road between Drake Road and Kiser Road;
  • Stough Road at April Court
  • 3000-block of Midland Road
  • Club View Road at Walden Pond
  • Barrier-Georgeville Road at Sanctuary Road
  • Bowman –Barrier Road at Boston Road
  • Pharr Mill Road at Paul Linker Road

Police put up barricades on Stough Road shortly after noon Friday.

"The last couple of times it flooded, a car has gotten stuck," said Christina Golden as she looked down Stough Road to where the water was rising nearly to the top of a small bridge.

Still, some drivers ignored the barricades and drove through the standing water, risking stalling their vehicle or worse.

As Golden gathered her children from their bus stop, she walked back into the family's house, partly build up on stilts by her grandfather.

"He put the house that high because one time it actually came all the way up here," she said.

The house is old and has tarps covering some spots on the roof. With the rain showing no signs of stopping, Golden knew she was in for a long night.

"I'm worried my roof is going to crash in on me because it's all leaky," she said.
