MOORESVILLE, N.C. --Mooresville Graded School District continues to gain both local and national attention for helping its students advance.

A few years ago, the district started a program that placed laptops in the hands of students. Starting from the youngest students to high school seniors, students are now able to become familiar with the technology.

“We’ve been fortunate.  We had a lot of excellent work by our teachers, our students, principals and the community,” said Mooresville Superintendent Dr. Mark Edwards.  “There’s a combination of factors, but certainly a lot of it has been the focused efforts using digital resources.”

A recent write-up in a The New York Times and visits from scholars and educators to Mooresville are becoming the norm for this district, which is doing so much with so little.

The school district ranks second in graduation rates and third in overall test scores.

“The fact (is) that our graduation rate is 91 percent, second in the state, and a few years ago it was in the 70s,” said Dr. Edwards.

Dr. Edwards said that a recent biology test is a prime example of this. Of the 400-plus high school students, only two failed the test, and the gap between white students and minority students is also closing, said Edwards.

Edwards also said that it’s not all about laptops, it’s about the collective efforts of those in the community, teachers and students.

“We’ve received some positive recognition.  It’s a team effort we are very proud ultimately of the work the students are doing,” Edwards said.
