CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A wreck near the intersection of Fairview Road and Providence Road snarled up traffic on Wednesday afternoon.

A motorist became stuck inside of a vehicle for about 30 minutes after striking a power pole in the 4500 block of Providence Road.  The crashed caused power lines to fall, leaving 1,200 without power.

The victim suffered potentially life-threatening injuries, officials said, and was transported to Carolinas Medical Center.

Providence Road was shut down in both directions at the intersection of Fairview Road and Sardis Lane for nearly nine hours. Officials had to close the road while crews repaired the two power poles.

Callers told 911 dispatchers that the vehicle was smoking.
