CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The local chapter of the NAACP is weighing in on the deadly shooting of a former college football star.
The group hosted a rally for Jonathan Ferrell Saturday in Marshall Park.
Officer Randall Kerrick is now charged with voluntary manslaughter after fatally shooting Ferrell 10 times last week.
A number of groups came together at the rally to ask for Kerrick’s charge be changed to one bearing a stiffer penalty. NAACP President Kojo Nantambu said if the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department trained Ofc. Kerrick to shoot to kill, then the department is training officers in the wrong way.
