RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -- North Carolina Republicans complained for decades about how Democrats ran the state. Now the time for griping is over.

The GOP is poised in 2013 to control state government for the first time in more than 140 years. Pat McCrory will become the first GOP governor in 20 years and the General Assembly reconvenes next week holding nearly two-thirds of the seats.

Republicans have a full plate already. They want to pass a tax code overhaul, solve the unemployment debt problem and require photo identification to vote in person.

Like Democrats in charge before them, Republicans are likely to get all the praise for successes and all the blame when things go wrong.

Democrats will spend 2013 working to find their way out of North Carolina's political wilderness.
