HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. -- The Carrington Ridge neighborhood in Huntersville does not allow political signs to be placed in front yards. Still, there are some homeowners who still do it.
Bena, who asked us not to use her last name, said she didn't know about that rule until the Home Owners Association sent her a letter Monday telling her to remove the Obama/Biden sign from her yard.
"As soon as I checked the mail, I drove around the circle, right by the HOA President's house and there was his Romney-Ryan sign in his yard," Bena said.
She showed NBC Charlotte a photo she snapped during Trick or Treating on Halloween night that showed the sign still up at the HOA President's house.
When NBC Charlotte visited his home the next day, the sign had been moved inside. The HOA President said he had taken his sign down weeks ago. He didn't want to talk about the situation and said the rules could be found in the HOA covenant.
Bena said she felt singled out.
"Four years ago my sign was ripped up, shredded on my lawn. Three weeks ago my first sign was stolen and now for this to happen? Can't some have a voice without being attacked," she asked.
NBC Charlotte drove around the neighborhood and found a few other political signs in front yards. One of those homeowners said the HOA came around Wednesday to tell them to take it down, but said he isn't going to do that until after the election.
