DAVIDSON, N.C. -- A Davidson mother is passionate about healthy eating, not just for her kids but also those at her children's school.

At Davidson Day school, healthy lunch Wednesdays are a bit different than your typical school lunch.

The preschoolers know all about the importance of eating healthy.

"One of the biggest things that these guys would not eat at the beginning of the year, carrots is probably the number one,” said Dana Sommer.  “We know that it's going to take a few times for them to actually like something, but we continue to try.”

The other key factor is education.

Sommer's lessons go hand-in-hand with what Brooke Thomas is trying to do with Davidson Day's Wellness Committee.

There is no cafeteria, so Thomas created healthy Wednesdays for the preschoolers.  So if the child is ordering food, it's from a place that only serves healthy choices.

“I think a lot of times we assume that kids won't eat a certain way but if they know why they should or should not eat a certain way and what it's doing to their brain, their tummy, their bodies, then they will make the choice,” Thomas said.

They are starting with the youngest in the school first and it's making a difference.

"They eat it willingly,” said Christy Krug.  “They don't question it.  They make good choices even when they are around peers that don't make good choices, choosing sweets and stuff like that."

The healthy option on Wednesday is expanding to the school's first through third graders, and Brooke's dream is of course one day that the entire student body will be able to take advantage of it.
