MINT HILL, N.C. – Charlotte’s newest high school, Rocky River High, will open its doors soon, after overcoming a rough start and a lot of controversy.
Since getting the keys, Principal Mark Nixon has been busy getting the new school in order, but getting to this point was a difficult task,
“At first, people had a lot of concerns and questions,” says Nixon.
Many parents were concerned about exactly which students would attend the school.
“I think what’s important is that once all that came down and the board made a decision, people kind of rallied around what was going to happen here,” he says.
Since then construction and set-up have been in full swing.
The halls still smell new and some of the chairs still have plastic on them and teachers are still moving into their classrooms.
“It is a lot of boxes,” says teacher Mona Hedrick. “Teachers, we tend to collect everything we can because you never know when you’re going to need it, so I’ve got one more trip from the van and then I’ll be done.
She has just under a month to finish.
Freshmen, sophomores and juniors will start classes at the $60 million, 265,000 square-foot school on August 25.
