CORNELIUS, N.C. – A “no swimming” advisory was issued Thursday for a portion of Lake Norman.

More than 260 gallons of sewage spilled into the lake Tuesday afternoon at Town Harbour Road in Cornelius.

According to city officials, the spill was caused by a broken valve in a sewer line on Windy Point Drive off Town Harbour Road.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Utilities was able to stop the discharge, and repairs to the lift station have been completed according to city officials.

Water samples taken on Wednesday indicate elevated bacteria levels in the cove adjacent to Town Harbour Road.

The result of the samples are what prompted the “no swimming” advisory.

Sample testing will continue until levels of fecal coliform bacteria decrease.
