CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A Charlotte teenager is dead after a crash in the University City area early Sunday.

John Ed Dixon III, 19,  was speeding in a 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt in the 1001 block of East W.T. Harris Boulevard when he lost control of his vehicle.

The car began to slide sideways and ultimately ran off of the road to the right. It struck an embankment and went airborne, traveling through trees.

The car landed about 150 feet from where it took off and continued to roll several times, ejecting Dixon who was not wearing a seat-belt.

Medic pronounced Dixon dead around 02:43 a.m. Sunday.

Dixon’s passenger, Travis Newell, 19, sustained some non life-threatening injuries and was taken to Carolinas Medical Center for treatment.

Speed and alcohol are factors in this crash, police said.

Anyone with information on this crash is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600 or Detective Steve Williams at 704-432-2169.
