KINGS MOUNTAIN, N.C. -- Investigators hope a $2,500 reward will help them catch whoever murdered a smoke shop store clerk in Kings Mountain.
Someone shot and killed 45-year-old Scott Davis Thursday night inside Smoker's Etc. at 5105 Highway 74.
Davis was married with three sons.
At last check, investigators were following several leads, but have not identified a suspect or made any arrests.
"I loved that boy to death," said Scott's father Tommy Davis, who is also a clerk at the same store but works a different schedule.
"Had his whole life ahead of him and they just took it away from him with one gunshot."
Two friends who regularly drop in to say hi found Davis murdered around 6:15 Thursday night.
Davis says the store was ransacked and the money stolen.
The friends ran to neighbor Michael Mote's house. He called 911.
"They thought he fell and bumped his head on the cash register and it's why he fell, it's what they thought, and they rolled him over to do CPR, check him out, saw a bullet hole in his head," Mote said.
Seven detectives are working the case. The store doesn't have cameras and the crime wasn't caught on tape.
It's been open less than a year and never been robbed before.
Davis says twice last week someone tried to break in through the back door.
The store sells tobacco and what investigators call potpourri sprayed with chemicals that can be highly addicting, but are not illegal in North Carolina.
Officials executed a search warrant at the store six months ago, took samples and sent them to the SBI for testing. The results are not back yet.
Investigators aren't saying if the suspect or suspects stole merchandise as well as money.
"I don't understand why, never will understand why, but I know it sure messed up a lot of people," Davis said about his son's murder.
