ROCK HILL -- A Rock Hill fire killed one man Thursday, and left a woman with serious burns.
It happened at a home at 1132 Hoyle Street. The home was a total loss.
Family members identified the man who was killed as 98-year-old Fred Cathcart.
The woman who was badly burned has been identified as 53-year-old Alice Crockett. She was flown for treatment to the burn unit in Winston-Salem.
Cathcart's niece, Charlene Young, lives right across the street.
"I just heard a loud noise and I ran back in to call 911 to get them help."
Young described the sound she heard as being like a rumble.
"Like an earthquake came through or something," she said.
Firefighters say it was a tough fire and the home had nearly burned to the ground by the time they arrived.
Neighbors say Cathcart was retired, did some odd jobs around the neighborhood, and owned the home where he died.
Janice Jenifer grew up in the neighborhood where almost everyone seems to have known Fred Cathcart.
"This was a very loving family. He's been in my life all my life and he is dearly going to be missed," she said.
Fire investigators have yet to determine the cause of the blaze.
