CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A Charlotte-based bus company had a history of citations and was appealing an unsatisfactory safety rating when one of its buses crashed in Virginia Tuesday, killing four people.
NewsChannel 36 checked the records of other Charlotte-based companies and found they have similar problems as Sky Express Bus.
The Mega Bus is a popular way for people in Charlotte to get to Raleigh and beyond for just a few bucks, but safety records show the company has a history of problems. A doubledecker Mega Bus was involved in a deadly crash last September in New York where the driver was charged with negligent homicide.
According to the Department of Transportation, the Mega Bus drivers are worse than 77 percent of all other buses and trucks on the road, and DOT has cited the company for having unqualified drivers.
The DOT says Sky Express bus drivers are worse than 99 percent of other buses and trucks on the road, and the company has been cited repeatedly for having non-English speaking drivers.
Another bus service running from Charlotte to Chinatown in New York picks up passengers daily at the Sugar Creek Days Inn. DOT says Blue Sky's bus drivers are worse than 79 percent of others on the road, and the company has also been cited for non-English speaking drivers.
