CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Rescue crews responded to a possible drowning call in east Charlotte Monday evening.
Paramedics were called to the Thorngrove Apartments on Firelight Lane just before 5:30 p.m. and told NewsChannel 36 that they rushed one person with life-threatening injuries to Presbyterian Hospital.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officers said that a one-year-old infant was found in a bath tub in one of the apartment units. According to police, the mother was giving the child a bath and went into the kitchen for a few minutes to cook. They said when she returned she found the infant in distress.
Police said the child will survive and neighbors told NewsChannel 36 that they saw police carry the crying child out of the building.
The child's mother, 20-year-old Jessenia Gissel Matute, was charged with child neglect.
The Department of Social Services is investigating.
