CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Building inspectors are trying to figure out why pieces of concrete fell from a building in uptown Charlotte.
The sidewalk in front of the Builder's Building on West Trade Street is now blocked off with scaffolding.
Police say they received calls around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday about a couple of pieces of concrete that had fallen off the building. Firefighters responded to the scene and pulled down other larger pieces as a safety precaution.
"When they told us about the collapse we thought the whole building was in pieces," said Matt Alexander, who works at International Minute Press, which is located inside the building. "It was a relief to see it wasn't that bad, but I'm still concerned about the integrity of the building right now."
One uptown worker told Newschannel 36 that he saw pieces of concrete fall from the building Wednesday afternoon.
"Around 4:30 yesterday a couple of us were walking to our cars and we saw the debris fall, and a couple ladies almost got it. They just missed getting hit," said Timothy Foreman.
Though inspectors have yet to determine what caused the falling debris, the building is a historical structure from the 1920s, and it isn't the only one to cause concern.
"I walk to work about three blocks everyday and there are a couple other old buildings with scaffolding and it kind of worries me about their structural integrity," Foreman said.
International Minute Press says they are still open while repairs are being made.
