Man charged with DWI after hitting, killing pedestrian

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Charlotte-Mecklenburg police have charged a man with DWI after he hit and killed another man early Friday morning on Prosperity Church Road in northeast Charlotte.

It occurred about 3:45 a.m., between Loganville Drive and Pantherville Drive. Police said James Nash hit and killed Michael Dennis Case while he was walking his dog.

Police said Case was crossing the Prosperity Church Road at the intersection when Nash hit him with his 1999 Volvo.

Case died a few moments after the incident happened. His dog was taken to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Animal Care and Control Bureau for treatment for a broken hind leg.

Nash exhibited signs of impairment and was arrested on the scene and charged with DWI, according to police. He was transported to the hospital where a blood sample was drawn for analysis.

The collision is under investigation and additional charges may be pending.
