CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- One person was hospitalized in an accident on I-85 involving one emergency crew, a grandfather and two separate accident scenes.

AirStar flew over the mess at I-85 near I-77, where the southbound side of I-85 came to a near stand-still.

Emergency crews were handling the first accident when the grandfather of one of the victims tried to cross the highway and was hit by a pickup truck.

The man was taken to the hospital with injuries officials described as potentially life threatening.

All southbound lanes of I-85 at mile marker 38 were closed for about an hour Monday morning. The scene has since been cleared and all lanes reopened.

Traffic was detoured to I-77 South at Exit 38 to Brookshire Freeway/NC 16, then back on to I-85 South.
