PINNACLE, N.C. -- A fire that began as a prescribed burn consumed at least 800 acres in Surry County, and is now completely contained.

After jumping a fire line Thursday, the blaze quickly spread. Officials credit Saturday's mild weather in helping crews to get the fire nearly contained.

John Shelton, EMS Director for Surry County, says the fire may consume more than 1000 acres before it's completely out. An exact number of scorched acreage is expected soon.

Fire crews set backfires on Sunday in an effort to get the blaze further under control.

State Parks and Recreation spokesman Charlie Peek said Sunday that about 70 firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze, which began as a prescribed burn.

Peek says the fire has a low intensity and burned dead wood, leaves and undergrowth with little damage to standing trees. He says that means the blaze is reduced the risk of a catastrophic fire in the future.

The controlled burn was needed to "benefit habitat and reduce hazardous fuel loads," park officials said.

State officials closed the park after flames jumped the fire line Thursday.

No one was injured. Damage to park facilities is limited to fence rails and posts at viewing areas.

A community meeting will be held Monday evening at 7 for residents can ask questions about the fire. The meeting will be held at the Pinnacle View Baptist Church.

The Associated Press and WXII contributed to this report.
