CONCORD, N.C. -- An attempted dog theft ends in violence and lands one of the dog’s owners in the emergency room with a blow to the head from a large rock.

Michael Hampton and his fiancé, Jacquiline Guthrie, say two of their pit bulls have been targeted by thieves at least four times over the last year.

The most recent incident happened Sunday night.  Hampton says he saw a man in his yard and went to check it out when he was blindsided.  He still has a large welt on the back of his head from the blow from the rock.

"By the time I said ‘hey’ the other dude jumped the fence behind the house and I got hit in the back of the head,” Hampton said.  "I was knocked unconscious for a minute.  They said if I didn't have my hair, it would have cracked my skull a little bit."

He says the man and his rock-wielding accomplice were after his 90 pound pit bull named John.

“I have dogs just like everybody else has dogs, I really don’t’ understand why someone would come and do something like this for a dog,” Hampton said.

Hampton stumbled into the house and called Guthrie.

"Not again!” Guthrie said about her response.

That's because the couple had a female pit bull named Baby and someone also tried to steal Baby twice last summer.

Baby ended up poisoned and died.

Guthrie thinks dog thieves want John for fighting and wanted Baby for breeding, but if they couldn't steal her, nobody could.

"If they can't get them, they'll think someone else is going to try to come get them, so they'd rather just poison it,” Guthrie said.

Hampton now has medical bills in his fight to keep his family and his dogs safe.

"CT scans, blood cultures, we were in the E-R most of the night,” said Guthrie.

Police searched the neighborhood Sunday night but no one has been arrested.
