CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A motorcyclist was seriously hurt when he hit a truck during a police pursuit, according to the North Carolina Highway Patrol.

It started around 8 p.m. Monday on the I-485 inner loop, when police say the cyclist was speeding through a work zone.

The driver, 28-year-old Buddy Martin, made his way into the northbound lanes of Highway 160. Troopers say he then struck a pickup truck being towed by a tractor cab, which was turning left from the southbound lanes.

The crash ejected Martin from the motorcycle. Medics took him to CMC Main, where he is undergoing surgery and may lose a leg.

Charges are pending against Martin.
