MONROE, N.C. (AP) -- Authorities say a woman who ran her own trucking company died in a two-vehicle crash in Monroe.
The N.C. Highway Patrol said Martha Jane Evans of Wendell was killed in the crash late Monday night.
Troopers say a tractor-trailer traveling on U.S. 74 collided with a car at an intersection. The truck then crashed into a utility pole and overturned.
Evans died at the scene and the driver of the car was hospitalized.
The downed utility pole knocked out electricity to parts of northeast Monroe. Authorities also closed westbound lanes of U.S. 74 to clean up a fuel spill and some of the load from the truck. The lanes reopened Tuesday morning.
Records show Evans was owner and sole driver for Evans Express, which carried produce, meat and paper products.
