Police: Drunk driver causes multi-vehicle wreck

The wreck was reported after 7 p.m. in the 400 block of W. Sugar Creek Road, which is about a half mile from the intersection of Sugar Creek and North Tryon.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Three people were taken to the hospital Saturday evening after a multi-vehicle wreck in north Charlotte. 

The wreck was reported after 7 p.m. in the 400 block of W. Sugar Creek Road, which is about a half mile from the intersection of Sugar Creek and North Tryon. 

Police said the driver was impaired and crossed the median and then struck four vehicles. 

Medic says three people were taken to the hospital with injuries described as potentially life-threatening. 

One of those transported was the drunk driver. Accoridng to officials, the man is in intensive care at Carolinas Medical Center.

NBC Charlotte has learned once he's sober and released, he'll face a slew of charges.

The name of the driver has not yet been released.

Witnesses tell NBC Charlotte, the driver was so intoxicated, he could barely stand.
