GASTONIA, N.C. -- Gastonia police said a man killed his wheelchair-bound roommate in a gruesome manner on Tuesday.

"Shock. Very shocking, and it's too close. It's five doors down, and my kids play out here, “said Lakeasha Pierce.

Pierce and other neighbors on Little Avenue say they had no clue anything happened in Apartment F until police arrived around 10 on Tuesday night. That’s when 33-year-old Brian Hord's estranged wife called 911 saying she thinks her husband killed his roommate.

"He said he hit him over the head with a hammer," Elizabeth Hord told police.

Gastonia police say there was no sign of trouble inside the apartment until they searched the back room and found the body of 68-year-old Richard Gentry.

"It was in plastic bags at that point -- dismembered and put in plastic bags," said Capt. Steve Duncan with the Gastonia Police Department.

Friends who knew him from the homeless shelter As One say Gentry was a sweet man, disabled in a wheelchair.

"He was real friendly. He didn't bother anybody. He would give you shirt off his back if you needed it. That's how gentle of man he was," one acquaintance said.

Police say there's no clear motive. The two had been friends for years but only lived together for a few months. Hord's wife told police this was no accident.

"He's actually mentioned doing it before. He just said he hadn't gotten up the courage to do it," said Elizabeth Hord.

Hord has been charged with murder, according to police.  He is being held at the Gaston County Jail under a $10,000 bond.

Police have not released a motive in the murder.
