Police: Man confronted about alleged child abuse kills himself

ROWAN COUNTY, N.C. -- A man questioned for allegedly having inappropriate contact with multiple children killed himself on Rowan County church property.

The Rowan County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a victim with a gunshot wound at Bible Missionary Baptist Church in the 11300 block of Concord Road last week.

The man has been identified as Danny Ray Kesler, 59. Kesler lived at City of Refuge Christian School, which is located on church property. The church website lists Kesler and his wife Sherry as house parents.

The sheriff’s office says church officials confronted Kesler about having inappropriate contact with more than once child. Police say all of them were in their early teens.

After approaching him, Kesler reportedly apologized for his actions but said he was not going back to prison. He has previous convictions on many charges including possession of marijuana, soliciting the sale of cocaine, probation violation, disorderly conduct and violation of court order.     

Kesler then went outside, according to witnesses, saying he needed fresh air. He was found shortly after when a gunshot wound in his head. Police believe it was a self-inflicted shot fired after the meeting.

The investigation is ongoing.
