HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. – Huntersville Police have arrested a man they say attempted to rob victims in the Target and Home Goods parking lots.
One of the attempted robberies happened during broad daylight Monday morning.
According to authorities, Darrin Keith Patterson, 47, of Cornelius, reached into the open window of a parked car at the Target. Officials said Patterson tried to take the keys from the woman sitting inside. Officials say he also demanded money.
Authorities say Patterson ran from the scene and jumped into a cab.
Prior to the Target parking lot incident, there was a similar attempted robbery at the Home Goods parking lot which is also in the Northcross Shopping Center.
The victim reported that Patterson approached her and demanded her vehicle. When she refused, he moved on.
Both victims described the assailant as between 40 to 50 years old, tall with short black hair wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt and jeans.
Patterson was apprehended on Tuesday by the Huntersville Police Department, and charged in connection with both robberies at 9801 Sam Furr Road and the attempted robbery just moments earler in an adjacent parking lot.
Officials say Patterson is on Federal probation for a carjacking in New York, and he is also a registered sex offender.
A tip to Crime Stoppers led authorities to Patterson.
