LONG VIEW, N.C. – Police have charged a man after a toddler was found dead, and another child was injured.
Friday afternoon, first responders were dispatched to a residence on 25th Street Northwest for a report of a cardiac arrest.
Upon arrival, authorities reported finding a one-and-a-half-year-old boy dead, and his 3-year-old sister suffering from injuries.
Neighbors described the girl's injuries as fresh and old burns on her head and back area. She was taken to Frye Medical Center for treatment.
"It was just horrible," said Kyle Sigmon, who held the little girl as they waited for police to arrive. "I couldn't imagine how a little girl could get burns like that. I put my hand on her back and you could still see the scabs."
The mother of the children was not home at the time of the child's death, according to officials, and the kids were under her boyfriend's supervision.
Friday night authorities arrested William Howard Lail, 25, and charged him with murder in the death of the 18-month-old. Lail also faces two counts of felony child abuse and is charged with violating his probation.
The toddler's cause of death is not yet known.
